The Chinese Delegation of Tibetologists Paid a Visit to Latvia

    From March 22 to 26, 2011, the Chinese delegation of Tibetologists paid a visit to Latvia. During the stay in Latvia, the delegation visited the Latvian Saeima (Parliament) and held discussions respectively with Hon. Mr. Ojars Eriks Kalnins, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Hon. Mr.Sergejs Mirskis, Vice Chairman of the Latvia-China Parliamentary Group  and some other Members of Parliament of the Latvian Saeima. Mr. Hao Shiyuan, Head of the delegation, Deputy Secretary-General of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Academy Member of CASS, and President of the Chinese Ethnological Society, briefed the Latvian side on the current social and economic development, the protection of ecological environment, the development of the educational, cultural and tourism sectors etc. in Tibetan Autonomous Region, and the situation of protection of freedom of religious belief in the Tibetan region. He also answered the questions put forward by some of the Members of the Saeima.

The delegation also visited some Government Departments including the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia. The delegation held a seminar in the University of Latvia, and held discussions respectively with the professors and students of University of Latvia and the Confucius Center of Riga Stratins Univeristy, and attended the press conference held by Mr. Hu Yeshun, Ambassador of China in Latvia at the Chancery of the Chinese Embassy. The members of the delegation include His Highness Zong Kang, the 13th Living Buddha and Director of the Administration Committee of the Kumbum Monastery in Qinghai Province.

Mr. Hu Yeshun, Ambassador of China in Latvia accompanied the delegation throughout the visit and attended the above activities.
