On August 29, 2011, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met with visiting President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly Nasr Abdulaziz al Nasser in the Great Hall of the People.

Xi said that the UN, being the most universal, representative and authoritative inter-governmental international organization, has played an irreplaceable role of safeguarding world peace, promoting common development and advancing international cooperation since it was founded. The international situation is undergoing complex and profound changes. Such global issues as climate change, food security, nuclear safety and major natural disasters have become more prominent and the international financial market is experiencing turbulences. The recent situation in West Asia and North Africa is worrying and peace and stability in the Middle East face severe tests. China firmly supports the UN in playing a bigger part in the international affairs, assuming a leading role on the Libyan and other relevant issues and making greater contributions to maintaining peace and security at regional and international levels.

He noted that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the People's Republic of China resuming its legitimate seat in the UN. Over the past four decades, China has resolutely pursued the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and participated fully in the work of the UN. The cooperation with the UN has become an important part of the Chinese diplomacy. China will, as always, take an active part in the UN affairs and support the work of the UN and President of the General Assembly.

Nasser expressed agreement on Xi's views on the current situation and the role of the UN. He noted that the world today faces many challenges and the role of the UN is becoming more important. As President of the UN General Assembly, he will work hard to make the 66th Session give top priority to the issues of food security, poverty eradication, armed conflicts and climate change. He highly admires China's support for the UN and said that China's remarkable contributions to the organization are obvious to all. He hopes China will continue to firmly support multilateralism and a bigger role of the UN in the international affairs. The UN will further strengthen cooperation with China.

The two sides also exchanged views on the UN Millennium Development Goals and the reform of the UN.
